On Sunday, at a news conference held by Maliki and Bush, Zaidi threw his shoes, one after the other, at the U.S. president, shouting, “This is a farewell kiss, Dog”
Zaidi was covering US led invasions since 2003. During his tenure he had interviewed widows and orphans, thou he had expressed his deep desire once to an editor that he wish to hit Bush with his shoes, in Arab countries this is considered as a big disgrace.
Zaidi was distraught over the torture of prisoners at Abu Ghraib. He had covered many US airstrike in which children and innocent were trapped under rubble. Thou the whole Iraqi media were apologetic and condemned the incident. One unknown man has made a memorable end for two term president; Bush whole tenure was shadowed by war against Iraq and Afghanistan. And this farewell gift from a fellow Iraqi friend will be in his memory for a long time.
Today Zaidi is a hero. People across the Middle East applauded Zaidi for expressing their anger at Bush administration. Some one said “al-Zaidi’s worst crime was his bad aim.” Seems Zaidi has a point and now the attention as well. I believe this act of braveness against Bush will keep him in the news for a long time. And his media experience will be quite helpful in making him a people’s leader around the Middle East.
Zaidi could be sentenced to up to seven years in prison for insulting the nation’s leader.
